Critical media literacy: the case of Greek primary education

Abstract

The main purpose of this Philosophical Dissertation is to study the presence of critical media literacy in Greek primary education. Based on existing bibliography but also contributing to it, this paper examines the theoretical background of critical media literacy and discusses it, as well as that of modern curriculum and school textbooks, which constitute its research material, in order to answer if and how critical media literacy is present in the standing curriculum and school textbooks of Greek primary education. This thesis consists of two parts (theoretical background and research). The first part begins with a presentation of the most crucial theoretical approaches to Media, accompanied by significant information on the historical and social evolution of the four media examined (radio, television, cinema and the internet) as well as each medium’s particular characteristics.
