A clinical and microbiological evaluation of systemic and local metronidazole delivery, as an adjunct in non-surgical periodontal treatment of young patients with aggresive periodontitis
Abstract
Based upon the considerable amount of evidence indicating that certain bacterial species (mainly anaerobic Gram- and facultative anaerobic Gram-) appear to be etiologic factors of initiation and progression of periodontal disease, we assumed that antimicrobial therapy could contribute to resolution of inflammation of the periodontal tissues as well as stabilization of the clinical and microbiological shift to a situation more compatible with health. Systemic administration of antibiotics and during the last years local application of antimicrobial agents to periodontal pockets has been used extensively as an alternative or supplement to scaling and root planing in an effort to control periodontal disease. To date there have been only few reports concerning local delivery of antibiotics in young people with aggressive forms of periodontitis. Aim of the present study was the evaluation and comparison of the effect produced by systemic administration of metronidazole or local application ...
