The sacrament of priesthood in the middle and late byzantine period: a ritual and iconographic approach
Abstract
The present thesis deals with the rites of ordination to the three ranks of priesthood (deacon, presbyter and bishop) used in the Middle and Late Byzantine period (843-1453). The subject is explored by means of a historical and liturgical approach, with the main aim of detecting, presenting and evaluating information provided by the direct and indirect historical works of the period under consideration, in view of the earlier and contemporary sources.The study is divided into four chapters. The first three focus on the rite of ordination through the prism of written sources. In the first chapter, we examine the ordination of the deacon as it is presented in euchological manuscripts, and we investigate its evolution and the ceremonial elements that have been added to it. Furthermore, we discuss the possible causes of those additions.
