Falls, fear of falling, quality of life and physical activity in elderly patients with severe knee osteoarthtritis: the effect of total knee arthroplasty and therapeutic exercise

Abstract

Severe Knee Osteoarthritis is a risk factor for falls and one of the leading causes for disability in the elderly. Total knee arthroplasty is a common surgery for the treatment of severe Knee Osteoarthritis. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the improvement of falls rate, fear of falls, physical activity, quality of life, physical function and static and dynamic stability, a year after total knee arthroplasty and therapeutic exercise in patients with severe Knee osteoarthritis. An additional purpose was, to investigate the effect of an interventional functional and balance exercise program to improve physical function six weeks and a year after total knee arthroplasty and falls rate a year after surgery.
