The use and overuse of pharmaceuticals by the greek elite athletes

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to be informed about the use and overuse of pharmaceuticals by the Greek elite athletes. Our study was based, using a special for this purpose, multiple choice questionnaire, on the answers, self-reported by the athletes, about the amount of pharmaceuticals, used by them during training and before the critical games, to enhance their performances, about the persons and the reasons who motivate them on use and misuse these pharmaceuticals or medical substances, about their knowledge for illicit substances used by athletes and their opinion for the doping-control in sports, about their knowledge for the actions and adverse effects of the pharmaceuticals used by them for athletic purposes. Finally, we tried be informed, for the opinion of the athletes about the ethical or/and unethical of use and misuse of Illicit substances by other athletes and their own behavior with the use of pharmaceuticals in other athletes, as future coaches.
