Education in Northern Epirus during the late Ottoman Empire: the founding, organisation and operation of greek schools
Abstract
This is the first global treatment of Greek education in the specific area of Northern Epirus during the late Ottoman Empire. It describes the educational activities carried out by the Greeks of Northern Epirus during the late Ottoman Empire despite difficulties and oppressions of every sort and presents the organisation and operation of the education system under the protection and with the support of the local community and communal authorities and the financial assistance of donors and benefactors. Research in archival sources and the published literature revealed a wealth of previously unused important and fundamental information which adds invaluable details to the education map of Northern Epirus and necessitates a revision of earlier views and opinions and a reassessment of the dimension and dynamic of Greek education and schooling and of the cultural and intellectual level of the Greek population of the region.
