Investigation of levels of metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 in patients with unstable angina and myocardial infarction

Abstract

Plaque rupture, with the subsequent thrombus formation, is considered to be the major cause of acute coronary syndromes which range from unstable angina to acute myocardial infarction. Several pathophysiological factors implicate this process, including inflammation, rheological factors, circumferential wall stress and vasoconstriction, as well as degradation of atheromatic plaque elements. Matrix metalloproteinases are very important molecules in the process of vascular remodeling by regulating extracellular matrix degradation. Recently, more and more data have emerged regarding the role of metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in the development of atheromatic plaque. It has been reported that the levels of metalloproteinases are elevated not only in the affected tissue but in the circulating blood as well. These data led us to the hypothesis that patients with degradated atheromatic plaques may have elevated serum levels of metalloproteinases. Therefore, we des ...
