Fatigue in women with breast cancer undergoing radiotheraphy

Abstract

The aims of this study were : a) to describe the experience of fatigue in women with breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy b) to identify the pattern of fatigue over time during their course of radiotherapy and c) to explore the impact of fatigue in their life. The study included 106 women with breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy as outpatients in “Saint Savas” Hospital. All of them had undergone breast cancer surgery (83% breast conserving 17% mastectomy) and almost half (57,5%) chemotherapy. A pilot study preceded the data collection which lasted one year. The instruments included Piper Fatigue Scale a questionnaire for fatigue assessment, the SF-36 Health Survey, and demographic and clinical data. Data collection was carried out prospective through interviews over three points in time: at the beginning (in the first two days of radiotherapy) the middle and during the last week of radiotherapy.
