Xenophon and Castiglione on the aesthetics of political communication

Abstract

This thesis begins with a discussion of the Principles of Political Communication. Key milestones in the development of the discipline of Political Communication, its influences from different disciplines, such as psychology, and technologies, such as television and the Internet, are listed, as well as some typical examples of Political Communication practices in the 20th century. A more theoretical and philosophical approach to the principles of Political Communication is then attempted, as a conflation of the terms ‘Politics’ and ‘Communication.’ In the main chapters of the thesis we deal on the one hand with four works of Xenophon, Hiero, the Oeconomicus, Cyropaedia and Agesilaus, and on the other hand with the Book of the Courtier by Baldassare Castiglione.
