The history of Chaos Magic: 1976-2000

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to give a thorough account of the history of chaos magic, from 1976 to 2000, in Britain, Germany and the United States. Chaos magic is an occult current and philosophy that began in Leeds in the late 1970s, through the efforts of occultists Ray Sherwin and Peter Carroll, who formed the first chaos magic group, the Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT). While this group’s members and activities are emphasised, the proliferation of chaos magic activity outside of the IOT is also examined in detail. Simultaneously, chaos magic is studied here within the context of a broad, decentralised network, termed the ‘Chaos Scene’, characterised primarily by an enthusiasm for the concept of Chaos, both societal and cosmological. More specifically, the dissertation will examine the relationship between chaos magic and musical subcultures that constituted part of the Chaos Scene, such as punk, anarcho punk, industrial, and electronic dance music. Viewing chaos magic against the backdrop of popular music reveals important dimensions of the culture that chaos magic practitioners and enthusiasts inhabited, their political and social concerns, and their countercultural vision.
