Optical and microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols based on ground-based and satellite remote sensing techniques

Abstract

The overreaching goal of the dissertation thesis is three-fold: First, we present the upgrade lidar system of Thessaloniki (THELISYS), providing the new capabilities in the frame of aerosol measurements focusing on aerosol typing procedures. We provide a description of the optical and mechanical parts of the upgraded system, the scientific and technical objectives of its design, and the calibration methodologies. We describe in detail the conceptual design, its mechanical and optical parts, and finally an assessment of its potential and the retrieval uncertainties of the measured quantities are discussed. The EARLINET (European Aerosol Research Lidar Network) quality assurance quality tests are also being applied in the system in order to test the good performance of the lidar after the upgrade processes.
