Greek public prisons, 1836-1940

Abstract

The research refers to the Greek penitentiary space and its production processes, during the first hundred years of the modern Greek State and aims to point out the "identity" of these early Greek prison buildings and their architectural and urban characteristics, in the specific context of architectural design. Therefore, the thesis will contribute to cover the lack of relevant architectural studies. In a general relevant context, the thesis aims to link these institutional buildings to the quality of the law civilization of our country, since they are considered as the physical presence of a new state service newly formed in terms of the western "modernity". These Greek prisons -under the original view of the thesis- are examined as the Public Buildings whose special use is linked to the issue of reformation through incarceration and, also, as the Public Buildings which are the “dwellings” for people convicted to imprisonment.
