Educational research methodology in light of legitimation code theory
Abstract
The present study examines Educational Research Methodology in Greece as a subject at Educational Departments (undergraduate level) taking consideration of a relatively new theory in sociolinguistics known as “Legitimation Code Theory”. Legitimation Code Theory extends Basil Bernstein’s concepts of codes and proposes the notion of an ‘epistemic device’. It also uses Bourdieu’s field theory and Roy Baskar’s Critical Realism. In this context, the history and codes of Educational Research Methodology as an ‘elusive science’ are discussed. Opinions of 1005 students and 71 university teachers are analysed together with the life histories of three pioneers in the field in Greece (Michael Vamboukas, Michael Kassotakis, and Thalia Dragona). Semantic codes of varying density and gravity have been traced in four classes on Research Methods.
