Direct methods of plasticity, limit and shakedown analysis, are used to define the safety margins of a structure subjected to varying thermo-mechanical loads against plastic collapse. Limit analysis concerns a monotonically increasing loading, while in shakedown analysis the variable loading can follow any load path within a given domain. Direct methods are implemented by the coupling of finite element methods with techniques of computational optimization, and for common engineering structures lead to large scale problems. The respective optimization algorithms performance is highly affected by the starting points. In the present thesis, a mechanically motivated novel non-zero residual stress field starting point is introduced that leads to improved solution times for the examples studied. The selective algorithm, a very efficient model reduction technique is combined with the general nonlinear optimization software IPOPT and several criteria for the selection of the plastically most ...
