IN THIS WORK (A) THE RADIOLYSIS OF DIDODECYLDIMETHYLAMMONIUM BROMIDE (DDAB) VESICLES, (B) THE EFFECT OF Γ-RADIATION AND OF 17A-ETHINYL-ESTRADIOL ON THE DDAB VESICULAR STRUCTURE AND (C) THE RADIOLYSIS OF 17A-ETHINYL-ESTRADIOL IN HOMOGENOUS AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS AND IN DDAB VESICLES WERE STUDIED. THE CRITICAL VESICLE CONCENTRATION (CVC) REGION OF DDAB WAS DETERMINED TO BE 9.2X10 -5 M USING KINETIC DATA. Γ-IRRADIATION UNDER CONDITIONS, WHERE MAINLY OH RADICALS EXIST, CAUSES SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL CHANGES OF THE DDAB VESICLES. AS DETECTED BY ELECTRONMICROSCOPY, HIGH RADIATION DOSES DO NOT ALTER THE SIZE OF THE VESICLES, BUT THEY INDUCE CONSIDERABLE MODIFICATIONS OF THE MORPHOLOGY OF THEIR SURFACE. USING A WELL KNOWN CHEMILUMINESCENT REACTION AND THE 17A-ETHINYL- ESTRADIOL AS A FLUORESCENT PROBE (FLUORESCENCE MAXIMUM BETWEEN 312 AND 322 NM, DEPENDEND ON THE SOLVENT POLARITY), IT IS ALSO FOUND THAT Γ-IRRADIATION LEADS TO INCREASED FLUIDITY AND POLARITY OF THE POLAR REGION OF THE VESI ...
