Sonographic assessment of diaphragmatic motion in healthy volunteers under conditions of quiet breathing, increased inspiratory resistances and reduced thoracic compliance
Abstract
ΑΙΜDiaphragmatic movements constitute an important contributing factor in breathing patterns, however they are relatively difficult to evaluate especially in real time. In recent years, M-mode ultrasonography has been used extensively as a simple, non-invasive method to assess diaphragmatic movement offering the advantages of safety, relative simplicity and bedside availability. However, diaphragmatic breathing patterns under conditions of resistive loading or decreased thoracic compliance still remain poorly documented. This study attempts to assess diaphragmatic motion under conditions of inspiratory resistive loading and decreased thoracic compliance with the use of M-mode sonography. METHOD We assessed diaphragmatic motion in 40 healthy volunteers in four different study phases using M-mode sonography.
