The consecration of the holy myron in the ancient Orthodox Patriarchates of the East

Abstract

The historical and liturgical development of the Consecration of the Holy Myron in the Orthodox Patriarchates of Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria and Constantinople is researched with the method of Comparative Liturgy. It is based on the study - and text edition - of the unpublished manuscript Scroll 55 (NF E55) of Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai (Hagiasmatarion of the Patriarch of Alexandria, Sofronios the Third). The manuscript contains the Myron Liturgy of the Patriarchate of Alexandria –in which only the Myron is consecrated- and the consecration of the Myron during the Divine Liturgy of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The Myron-Liturgy is reconstructed on the basis of: E55A and similar texts of the 12th century and other ancient liturgical and ecclesiastical sources. It’s articulated on the Liturgy of Saint James with Egyptian influences (Liturgy of Saint Mark, and other liturgical texts).
